The Alchemist’s Odyssey: About the Author
Welcome. I am Aaron Schroeder, the architect behind The Alchemist’s Odyssey.
Historically, alchemy was the pursuit of transformation—attempting to refine base materials into noble states through a blend of early scientific method and philosophical inquiry. This blog operates on a modern translation of that exact principle: the rigorous, continuous transformation of raw data into applied knowledge.
The Engineering Framework
My foundational background is rooted in the physical sciences, holding a B.S. in Mining Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Professionally, I operate as an engineer specializing in the design and optimization of auxiliary piping systems. My day-to-day involves navigating the complex realities of fluid dynamics, pressure differentials, and material constraints within large-scale maritime manufacturing environments. That requirement for precision, process control, and systematic troubleshooting forms the underlying operating system for everything I pursue outside of the shipyard.
Applied Thermodynamics and Chemistry
The same laws of thermodynamics and chemistry that govern industrial systems apply universally. On this site, you will occasionally see these principles applied to culinary processes. Whether optimizing thermal transfer rates for specific Maillard reactions or managing the microbial environments and fermentation kinetics of wild yeast, I approach these processes as empirical, replicable experiments rather than mere intuition.
Systems, Strategy, and Antiquity
Beyond fluid mechanics and applied chemistry, my fundamental interest lies in the analysis of complex systems. This manifests in a deep dive into historical engineering—analyzing how ancient civilizations solved macro-scale logistical and architectural problems without modern computational tools. From the geometric parameters of Roman dodecahedrons to the mechanized logistical networks of WWII, I study the mechanics of human ingenuity.
This analytical approach extends to my recreational simulations, where I analyze the tactical and strategic variables within expansive tabletop ecosystems like the Warhammer 40k universe and high-level grand strategy video games.
The Objective
The Alchemist’s Odyssey is a repository for these intersections. It serves as a documented exploration of continuous learning and applied methodology. Whether I am reverse-engineering the load-bearing tolerances of ancient structures, optimizing a closed-loop culinary process, or refining a metallurgical-level understanding of everyday tools, the objective is empirical mastery.
Grab your pack and come aboard, an odyssey of adventure awaits!
